Napa Valley Project
“I like the ones that exercise my aesthetic values and the technical side of it. One of the coolest jobs I ever did was this house in Napa Valley. The owners found a grove of standing dead fir in Canada, had it milled, dried, and sent to us. The older growth the tree, the more beautiful the wood is, and these trees were old, vertical grain fir, absolutely beautiful… one of those woods you don’t just get from the lumber company.
Moisture content made it hard to work with, and I remembered reading somewhere that drying standing dead wood requires a special drying treatment, so we had to figure that out. The material and the technical demands made this job very, very satisfying, and it is absolutely beautiful.”
